Welcome to Stella's Gourds

Stella

I was born in a small town in Mexico and was raised in El Paso Texas where I worked at the El Paso zoo in the South American Pavilion and Reptile House. Now living on a small farm west of Sperry, Oklahoma with my husband, Eddie, a few cows, and our dogs. We like to plant an annual vegetable garden and gourds.

As a child living in Texas and visiting family in Old Mexico my life was touched by the vivid colors, festive music, and artistic influence of Mexican and Indian cultures with a twist coming from my animal friends at the Zoo and their natural habitat outside the zoo. All of these memories - past and present - influence my work today.

The gourd's shape, size and thickness influence what it will become. Most of the materials I use are gathered from the vast array of gifts mother nature deposits around me: feathers, rocks, stones, grasses, pine needles, and acorns are a few, but am not limited to those. I may choose to embellish a piece with leather, wire, beads, twines and yarns. Melding the old world with the new. Whether pyro engraving, carving, or painting the finished piece turns from an ugly duckling to a swan, and when it makes my heart happy, it is ready.

My pieces are all hand made one of a kind. Reproductions are not attempted as each gourd has its own shape and distinct marks. At present my work is on display for sale at the following locations:
